23 Avenue Interchange Project
Project Status PDF Print E-mail
February 2010

During the winter months construction activity will be reduced but will continue. Because construction will continue during the winter months, the speed limit will continue to be reduced to 50km/hour to ensure the safety of motorists and workers on-site.

On Sunday, September 27 westbound and eastbound traffic along 23 Avenue has been moved onto the new westbound bridge across Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard and the CPR tracks. As a result:

  • there is access to Gateway Boulevard northbound from westbound or eastbound on 23 Avenue;
  • there is access to 23 Avenue eastbound or westbound from Calgary Trail southbound;
  • there is no access to southbound Calgary Trail available from 23 Avenue eastbound or westbound;
  • there is no access to 23 Avenue eastbound or westbound from Gate-way Boulevard northbound, recommended detours have been signed;
  • traffic along 23 Avenue will continue to be two lanes in each direction on either side of the new bridges. On the new bridges there will be two through eastbound lanes and one through westbound lane. There will be a single dedicated left eastbound turning lane and a single dedicated right westbound turning lane onto Gateway Boulevard northbound;
  • traffic signals at the 23 Avenue intersection have been removed and traffic along Calgary Trail and Gateway Boulevard is now free flow with three lanes in each direction;
  • there will be access to 23 Avenue in both eastbound and westbound directions from Calgary Trail southbound;
  • The 23 Avenue/Northwest Service Road access is now open allowing permanent right turns to and from 23 Avenue to the NW Service Road. There is also be a temporary set of traffic signals at this intersection until October 2010, which will allow temporary left turns from the service road to 23 Avenue eastbound;
  • the sidewalk along the north side of 23 Avenue across Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard and across 23 Avenue at 99 Street is now open, allowing pedestrian access across the interchange.
